We are Student Orientation, Advisory, and Registration Advisors, a group of student volunteers who have decided to dedicate ourselves to guiding new students in their transition to university life, throughout theStartUp Week (previously called 'O-Week'). Self-Confidence Workshop Sem 2, 2009

On 8^th August 2009 (Saturday), Curtin Volunteers! Personal Advancement Division organized a Self-Confidence Workshop, from 9.00a.m. - 12.00 p.m. at Learning Centre 1. We had invited Ms Hii Bai Yien, lecturer from Learning Centre to conduct the Self-Confidence Workshop. The objective of the workshop is build and master the self confidence which covered the area of physical, intellectual, spiritual and social among Curtin Volunteers!. It was a meaningful yet interesting Saturday morning while all the participants interact and communicate with each other by sharing, discussing and understanding how to apply the concept of self-confidence in the workshop.

Curtin Volunteers! done it once again!

Sunday 15^th September 2008 -

The Curtin Volunteers! (CV!) Sarawak Chapter, a student-run not-for-profit organization of Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Campus has done it once again with success in their fundraising project with the theme, “We Love, We Care” at Bintang Plaza, Miri yesterday afternoon.

This event started exactly at 11am with no delays and started off with an awesome magic show that attracts the attention of the crowd into the event. Both the game booths and donation boxes manage to help Palliative Care Association Miri gathered a great deal of fund. With the huge support from the participating club and the caring public, the Curtin Volunteers! are able to achieve the target by collecting a total amount of RM 1718.88 for the Palliative Care Association Miri. This fund will help lighten the financial burden of Palliative Care Association Miri which caters for a lot of patients annually.

During the closing ceremony, Yang Berhormat Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure development and Telecommunications has given much emphasis on health care in his speech. He reminded the people that we are to be more health conscious and he also mentioned that cancer is slowly becoming a top fatality cause in Malaysia.

On behalf of Palliative Care Association Miri, the Curtin Volunteers! would like to give our greatest thanks to the Management of Bintang Plaza, Dynasty Hotel, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Bintang Plaza), Nestle Pte. Ltd. and to all those who contributed in one way or another to this fundraiser.

CV! Blood Donation Drive Sem2, 2008

CV! Blood Donation Drive

September, 10- A blood donation drive was successfully held today in Curtin University, as 53 packs donors were contributed to Miri Blood Bank.

This event was organized by Curtin Volunteers! (CV!) in collaboration with Miri Blood Bank and Volunteer Aid Detachment 57 (VAD-57).

The event is aimed to replenish Miri Blood Bank’s supply of fresh blood. At the same time, to cultivate a voluntarism spirit among Curtin students and staff members in donating blood. The event was started from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the John Curtin Building Lobby.

Curtin Volunteers! which is a student-run, non-profitable organization has always been there to lend a helping hand for people in need. The blood donation drive that has been a tradition for every semester is one of the great examples to show the dedication of Curtin Volunteers! to the community. Meanwhile, VAD-57 members have also assisted throughout the event, by providing first aid services in time of need.

Orientation Week February Intake 2005

A few weeks ago, Curtin had an Orientation for the new students of February Intake 2005.
Initially, the Orientation was to be taken care of by a group called the Student Ambassadors (SA), which is under the Student Services.
Some CV members joined this group to help out with the Orientation, including a few who had helped with past orientations as SOAR Advisors.
However, things began to alter eventually halfway through the Orientation.

Allow me to begin my report from the night of the Third Day of the First week of Orientation, which was the Degree's O-Week.

Wednesday, 23 February, 2005

Some of the members of CV, including myself, attended a meeting with some of the remaining Student Council....
We discussed about the coming special day... "Chill" Day, which includes the O-City Tour (tour around Miri for the non-Sarawakians mainly) and also the O-Beach Fiesta (O-night celebrated at the beach, the Piasau Boat Club)...
And also on tomorrow's afternoon session, which was the introduction of the Student Council & the clubs in Curtin to the new students.
The MCs chosen for that session were Bay & myself.
We were done with the meeting approximately about one and a half hours.

Immediately after that meeting... we had another meeting, this one amongst the Curtin Volunteers members with Abel on tomorrow's activities, which included Abel's involvement in a Motivational Talk with Ms. Sham & Mr. Anba..
We discussed on what was going to be happening tomorrow during the talk and what we were all supposed to do.
After the meeting, I was certained.. with how the first three days of Orientation have been so boring for the new students, I'm sure they were going to love tomorrow.

We, the CV members, dressed in our black formal attire (except Fiona), first gathered at the cafeteria before moving to the Lecture Theater (LT)....
Went into business... discussing and working on the coming orientation sessions....
Had to practise a little on the dancing steps for our tradition song for Orientation, 'Lean On Me'...

Soon, it was time to begin the orientation session... but then.... we had a problem...
the tutorial registrations had already a long queue of students... and including the new students...
We had much difficulty to convince the new students to leave the queue and get into the LT...
After much frustrations and many reluctant students, we were able to convince many of them to stick with the Orientation...
However, the more stubborn ones.... left a painful mark in some of our hearts....

Anyway... we got to round up most of the new students that were outside in the queue... and the session finally began..
First, with an early energizer to liven the people up... with a little of... DANCING!
All of us CV members stepped up in front of the new students and in the lead were Gretchel & Joanna...
Whatever dance steps the two do, everyone else was meant to follow...
Abel just never seem to forget the students' reaction when the music began and Gretchel, as many of us knew, being excellent in dancing, left practically ALL of the new students stunned.
The new students were probably had a 'cultural shock'... the last few days had been barely lively and now today, we were bringing some party into the Orientation!
Besides that, it went great, cause we had the help of Abel to control the crowd....

After the energizer, was the Motivational Talk by Sham & Mr. Anba, two amazing lecturers in Curtin...
Sham (She prefers to be called so than with a 'Ms') especially was a particular speaker that the audience (including myself) was attracted to.. with her VERY powerful speech....
it even frightens me some times as she speak... hahaha!
Somewhere during her speech, we had a competition between groups among the new students, of making straw towers...
I won't go into details... but all I can say that was some of the students were quite creative at creating their straw towers....

ok... this session over, was lunch break... but mainly for the new students...
we, the CV members, stayed back for a little to practise more on our 'Lean On Me' dance again...
Soon, the Student Council members came on the dot at 12.30am...
then they took over inside to set everything up for the next session while the CV members went for lunch break..
While lunch break, got to interact with some of the new students, who were at the cafeteria... and we got good feedbacks... they'd enjoyed themselves today, much more than the earlier days, thankfully...
And oh yeah... during the earlier session, Abel was finally able to get the new students into their groups to prepare for their group performances for the coming O-Beach Fiesta... Hooray!!

Anyway... came the next session.. Student Council and Club Presentations...
in this session, Bay & I got to be chosen to be the MCs for the day...
First, the session started off with our 'Lean On Me' dance.. haha! It was great!
After that, the new students were introduced to the Student Council members and some of the clubs available in Curtin....
have to say.. it was quite boring actually.... mainly during the club presentation part... until the end of it when it finally came to Curtin Volunteers! to present....
and that I believe got the people's attention, cause Abel was asked to talk briefly about the organisation by one of the two CV presidents, Snow Jae...
at the end of CV's presentation by Snow Jae & Serena (Both presidents of CV), our CV dance group was brought forward to dance 'Just A Little While' by Janet Jackson... (the same dance we did for the charity event last year, Dance for Humanity)
The group consisted of five only, Gretchel, Joana, Navodi, Giegel & Azie.. I came in somewhere in the middle to do a 'cartwheel'... (lazy to explain what that is....)
There was a little accident and problem that followed after that, but thankfully no one was injured and everything just went on as usual...

OK.. our presentation over... it ends the session then.... and our work was done...
earlier, we had allocated an hour's time for the new students to do their tutorial registrations after the session and so they went off to do that....
Felt great and so cheery during the orientation.. sigh.. just loved it...
Foundation O-week next week.. now time to rest for now...

This part of the report is mainly involved Student Ambassadors (SA) and the CV members that joined SA, which included me, Azie, Izzah, Gretchel & Nichalos...
Early morning at Curtin, things were quick to get a little hectic...

ok... let me begin... there at the Student Services... was SO MANY students.. both current and new...
Things around the Student Services was hectic and so disorganised... naturally...
there was some of us, SA, to get ready to give some of the new students a campus tour....

During lunch break, I got to talk to Abel.. Abel was supposed to be the person-in-charged of the ice-breaking session the next day...
he had a quick thought and later told me to contact the other CV members for a meeting that evening...

That evening, there had been a slight confusion on our meeting venue... hehee...
The CV members gathered at the Engineering Meeting Room (which is above Student Services), and was surprised that Abel was so late.... btu then, he contacted us and turned out that he was waiting at the Council Meeting Room at the Admin. Building...
We were quick to head there to meet with him...

Less than 20 of the main active CV members were present for the meeting...
We made discussions on what we were gonna do for tomorrow's session... with that main objective in mind, which was to place the new students into different groups, which in conjunction, works for the group performances in the coming O-nite...
We were able to decide to use the same gimmick we did for the Math Workshop all so long ago last October... using animals and having the new students to make sounds and act like that corresponding animal..
with different species of animals, the new students would be able to find their own 'species' and form one group!
we had some more other discussions, but this was the main one... other discussions would include the activity plans for the final day of orientation.. 'Miri From Dawn to Dusk' is the title of that whole day...

Anyway... after that, some of us went out and ate dinner at Al Fresco...
This was also when we got reunited with Jenny....

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

Morning on campus, we needed to get ready before the ice-breaking session at the Lecture Theatre Foyer (LT Foyer)...
The turn out of the new students were quite well... as there was quite a large number of them...
We distributed pieces of folded paper with the animal types... and we were able to gather them into groups soon enough...
In groups now, they were told to pick a leader and an assistant leader for their groups.
After that, every group was to think of a group name and a cheer for the group....
Anyway.. overall, all of this was achieved in around twenty minutes time... supposedly...
They performed their group cheers to everyone else and with the session over with... they were brought to the next session of the orientation...

MC for this part of the orientation is, as last week, Andrew Wong... by the way he's a Degree student....
this next session is the official welcoming of the new students to the Curtin family...
during this time, Ms Rismaliza, our new Student Affairs Officer informed me to take over for Andrew after this session, cause he'll be having class later.. (Degree students begin their semester during the Foundation O-week)
I agreed to it...
I dare say this, it became apparent that CV was taking over most of the Orientation after that....

That afternoon, before the next session, there was a little promo on the event 'Miri From Dawn To Dusk' that's happening this Saturday...
Andrew helped to promote the said event... though with his lack of knowledge on the event, there were some notes to help him through...

anyway, the next session was introduction to the campus rules/policies/etc and all that..
pretty boring.. and at the end of it, I and Kimmy tried to liven things up, but weren't really...
Abel, who happened to be there to check on us, decided to take matters into his capable hands.. and he energized the place...
With time to spare, Abel used it to have the group to discuss on their group performances for this coming O-nite, this Saturday...
but before that, he helped introduce the tutorial timetable to them... and helped to explain how they should read the timetable... with that over with... the groups were formed and both CV & SA members that were there went to help around.. both to explain the timetable to those who missed Abel's lecture or to help them conduct a little of their discussion...
after that, Abel went off and just let us go on with this... soon enough, everyone began to go on home... until there were some of us there... six of us to be exact... I, Iqbal, Azie, & three new students, Janice, Anabel & John(?)...
These three were of the Elephant group.. and as the days had shown, the Elephant group's cheer wasn't really good... and was proving to be 'hurting' Iqbal's capabilities to conduct a group so far... hehehe!
there, we got to discuss on their cheer and finally we got to have one better cheer for them now.... better than their last one at least...

That night, at 7pm, there was supposed to be a meeting with Student Council as planned during last week's meeting with them... but it was cancelled and moved to the next day at the same time....
tomorrow's Morning Energizer session had been placed under Izzah's hands... (without her beforehand knowledge, for your information)...
So we of CV had decided for a meeting that night....
We discussed on what we could do for the energizer session... and we made a finally decision to do a game called 'Monkey See, Monkey Do'... I won't elaborate further from there, as this is a CV 'trademark' in a sense...
Then some more discussion were done, involving the Orientation night... but I forgot on what exactly....
Over with the discussions, we had to do some practise for the energizer session.. did the practise about half an hour and then we were done...

Anyway.. I think we went out to Lou Bin Tang, somewhere in the Senadin housing neighborhood... if my memory is right...
and oh yeah! Jenny, who had stopped her studying in Curtin, was meant to go back the next day... but with much convincing and Abel's working... she was able to stick around til the last day of Orientation... YAY!!

Wednesday, March 2, 2005

Morning... Energizer session!! Gathered the groups together and so we began the session...
Everyone had fun during the 'Monkey See, Monkey Do' part of the session, which was great....
However, the fun had to end and then we moved on to the next session, introduction to the foundation program and the lecturers....
Actually, at first I just stuck around the LT Foyer where the Energizer session was held earlier.. together with the other CV members... but then suddenly I was called to MC the Orientation... immediately I rushed to the Library Reading Room where the next session was being held...
didn't understand what happened to Andrew, or for that matter, the other SA members... but didn't care at the time...

after the introductions of the lecturers to the new students, the new students were brought to do their tutorial group registrations back at the LT Foyer...
Which then left only a few back at the library reading room.. namely Me, Abel, Iqbal, Azie & Mdm. Bibi Aminah, the Director of the Pre-University Program...
We got to talk together there... there were some inside matters that's been bothering all of us as of late...

Anyway, back to the Orientation... the next session was introduction to the campus policies and all that...
quite a boring session like some others as well.... thankfully, Abel was there to save the day when he appeared to check how we were doing... he gave an energizing talk with them, before there were all called into groups to discuss on their groups...

That evening, we had another meeting, as the next day, for the morning energizer session was also under Abel..
We discussed a little on that, but we were low on new ideas... so we decided to spend half of the one-hour session for the energizer and then the rest a little for the group's own discussion for the performance...
Tomorrow's activities are going to be done nearly the same as last Thursday's... which meant formal attires and stuffs.. with something extra...
tomorrow, at the end of the day, there'll be club registration... which means, it's also time that CV gets new members in... and Abel wanted us to do something special... taking how the CV of Curtin Perth did as an example and aspiration...
We got to decide on selling our CV T-Shirt during the time and also give out personally made bookmarks to the newly registered members...
our meeting continued some more on the activities in the evening of this Saturday (Miri From Dawn to Dusk), before the actual O-nite begins....
we gotten to know the final draft of the schedule during the day itself... and we've been assigned our duties and have gotten to know what we all were supposed to do and need to do... which then ended the meeting...
But then, remember, there was supposed to be a meeting between the Student Council & CV...
mainly for CV to report on their plans for O-nite... and done on 'Miri From Dawn to Dusk'... we got into discussing some complaints on services around campus.... and there was plenty.... won't bother to talk about them...

Some of us headed on home, but the rest of us had decided to do that personalised bookmark thing that night!
We went out to eat first.. at the coffee shop, Jumbo, situated near Lou Bin Tang...
As we ate there, we had many good laughs... you guys should listen to how Gretchel laughs nowadays... it's just gonna leave you laughing as well... hahaha...

At Kimmy's place where the others were doing the bookmarks...
We quickly got into things and we were all just being imaginative and creative and just went all out with our bookmarks... signing our name at the bottom of the bookmark we'd created...
We were able to create over 50 bookmarks in a few hours time...
then, we got to spend some more time just having fun... dancing most of the time! haha!
It was great fun... and after 3.30 in the morning, everyone began to go on home to sleep...

Morning Energizer with Abel & CV!
We enjoyed some more fun of 'Monkey See, Monkey Do'...
and then the groups were allowed a short time to discuss on their group performances....
soon enough, time to get into the Reading Room again for the next session of the orientation....
Motivational Talks by a few lecturers, Mr. Chan, Ms. Beena & Mr. Foad...
After that, the new students were dismissed for lunch break....
that afternoon would be the Student Council and clubs presentations...
this time round, things were a lot simpler for my work... as there was no need to introduce the Student Council....
just greet the audience and then pass the mic to Raymond Ting, the Student Council President...
then the whole Student Council was introduced and there goes the presentation... followed by Benet to announce the clubs to present themselves...
Clubs after clubs and in the very end, was, as before, Curtin Volunteers! presentation..

Before, it was the two presidents that did the presentation, Serena & Snow Jae.. this time it was Kimmy cause the two had class...
Kimmy did a good job at it too... and at the end of the presentation, as before, we had the CV Dance group to perform a little dance...

After that, new students were told to head for the foyer for the club registrations, including CV!...
the CV members gathered in the middle of the foyer and then danced to the 'Janet Jackson' song again...
Besides that, we also danced other songs, including the 'Jungle Song'..

Anyway... apparently, our dancing was attracting a lot of the students... and in the end, we'd actually attracted all of the new students to our CV! Booth from all the other few club booths that were there!
Guess publicity promotions like our dancing can help a lot eh? Just show that you can have fun and still be good at what you do, then for sure people will be attracted to you...
Oh and yeah.. our 50+ personally-made bookmarks? They were all gone even before the booth was done with the registering of new members...
Sales of the CV T-shirts also went quite well...

With registrations all done.. orientation for Foundation now officially done..
we cleared up the CV! booth and most of us headed on home to rest.... or prepare for this Saturday...
Some of us stayed back... according to Iqbal, they were planning to go to Desserts at about 7.30pm... and I'm joining them...

That night, with everyone ready to go out for dinner, we contacted Abel about it and he headed on to Sultana where we'd decided to go for dinner first while we went around to pick up the rest of the gang that is going...
We joined Abel quite some time later... had our dinner, enjoyed talking with each other... then Desserts....
wah.. for the first time that a gang, which consisted of some of the loudest people in CV (Gretchel & Izzah just to name a few), at our favorite spot Desserts, and we were quiet... main reason was identified as 'too tired'...
I still recall something that Izzah kept repeating.. a feedback from a new friend of ours...
"Didn't we just leave you guys at 3 to 4 this morning and now you guys are still dancing like crazy!!?"

Evening time, meeting amongst CV to finalise everything for the next day...
And we got to discuss some details that had been overlooked in past meetings... but with Benet who joined us later, we were able to cover them..
discussion went on til nightfall... and then we all headed home to rest and prepare for tomorrow.. the big day itself...

Afternoon 2.30, Piasau Boat Club.. time to get to work!
The first person I met there was John Mui, one of the Student Council members... then at the restaurant, the Village was setting up the sound system and all that..
soon the others has arrived.... we then went on to prepare for the evening games.. namely, Waterballoon Fight (Kimmy in charge), Volleyball (me) & Tug-of-War (Iqbal)...
Registrations was quite difficult and we had less participation than expected, but we went on with the games....

Unfortunately, I'm only able to talk about my game, the Volleyball.. as I have no clue what happened with the other games....
With much assistance from Sara... was able to get the Volleyball game running smoothly...
With six teams, loser-knockout style tournament with only ten minutes limit for each match, we were able to get to a winner... the group called Adolescent!! Congrats to them...
And my apologies to one particular team, who lost in a obviously unfair game... thanks to me... very very sorry for the inconvenience... but we were running low time...

Speaking of which, some of our CV! Girls also joined in the competition.
Quickly with that over, most of us headed to the showers to get ourselves freshened up for the night...
luckily I was able to be done just in time to get ready before the specials guests started arriving.. namely the Acting Dean of Curtin Sarawak Malaysia, Dr. Barbara Stauble & YB Lee Kim Shin....
By the way, the two MCs for the night were VJ & Nadia...
the Starlet band was there to perform... yes, Azie's family was there to perform.. but only four of them... including Tania, her cousin...
After the speeches by Raymond Ting, Dr. Barbara & YB Lee Kim Shin, there was a official opening ceremony, which was when we all got to the front around the three.... with the press reporters taking photos... (And yes, the photos did came out in the newspaper... I have the proofs)
after that, was time for dinner.. during dinner, there was a musical performance by the Curtin Music Club Band...

After dinner, it was time for the group performances...
man.. were things beginning to get wild or what....
after the group performances.. more performances by Starlet...
as Starlet performed, people were at first kinda shy to go to the dance floor and dance... thankfully.. some of us, CV! members, were able to get people to step up and soon, more followed and then there was a large group of people dancing to the music and the Starlets even accepted our request for ONE LAST song....
ok.. with that over, more group performances followed...
Soon all the group performances were over and done with... We then had quite some more fun around...
which included CV dance group, Student Council dancing & even the part where EVERYONE danced to 'The Jungle Song'... it was great fun and we all had a good laugh...

Then came the climax of the night... the candidates for Mr. & Ms. O-Week... which for this semester is called Mr. & Ms. O-Fiesta...
The candidates for Mr. were Richard aka Coconut Man, Jimmy aka Mini-Bal, Eddie & Josh...
The candidates for Ms. were Melanie, Elaine, Linda, Sabrina & Janice...
there got interviewed by the two MCs, VJ & Nadia.... and the candidates were even told to perform in front of everybody...
anyway... let's leave that aside for now...

this part was then the prize-giving session for the winners of the games that evening... of the Waterballoon fight, Volleyball match & also the Tug-of-War...
and then, the group with the best performance... in third place, Group 7 & 8 of Degree(Brit, Josh, V & others), in second place was Group Penguin & Monkey of Foundation (Johnna and his group) & finally the winner for Best Group Performance went to the Foundation group, Group Elephant & Bird (Richard aka Coconut Man, Janice, Anabel & the rest of their group)

And finally... we come to know who will be Mr. & Ms. O-Fiesta 2005....
For Ms. O-Fiesta........ MELANIE!!! Congratulations, girl! You definitely deserved it!
For Mr. O-Fiesta........ JIMMY!!! Hahahaa! Congrats, my man!! Your singing was excellent!! You too deserved it!
All the rest of you... Thank you for your participation... We're all winners! With our experiences and our enjoyment! Hope you'll all have a great future!!

What an enjoyable night... but to be honest.. it was a bittersweet ending...
not that because it is the end of orientation (the funnest part of university life).... but it's just some of the things that happened that night...
One in partricular was Jenny, who'll be going back to KL the next morning and won't be returning to us for a long time...

Jenny, we're gonna miss you. T_T

The CV! Appreciation Dinner at Grand Palace Hotel, Saturday, November 22, 2004.
Wore the same formal attire I wore that night for the Curtin Grand Ball... minus the blazer...
Iqbal finally came to my house at about 7pm or so....
Secretly brought in Abel's birthday cake and then I joined everyone else..... surprising some people with my sudden appearance...

OK... those that came to the dinner, I can remember, were... Abel, Iqbal, VJ, KC, Cucu, Jenny, Seryna, Snow Jae, Bay, Darryl, his gf (Sorry, don't know your name), Nadia, Azie, Stanley, Raymond Ting, his friend Ryan, Nichalos, Krishna, Edmund, Joana, Bella, Gretchel, Ron, Sara, Navodi, Fiona, Izzah, Zhung Yi... that's all...
It had a lot of fun... especially with VJ... hahaha! The night was definitely fun cause of you, my MC friend!

Dinner... one cake... some games..... a few karaoke... and lots more later.... and it was already near the end...
We had a round of appreciations... starting with Abel... He spoke out his appreciations to everyone that was still there....
After I don't know how long later... KC & VJ gave their speech of appreciation to CV! and all of us.... after them were... (Not in order) Ron, Bella, me, Iqbal, Sara, Jenny & Joana...
It was kind of a sentimental moment for some of us... but it was great...
After that round of appreciations, we had to leave...
Most of us planned to continue the night.. with clubbin' at Cheeries Berries.... but some of us went home...Iqbal helped to send me back.... hahaha, though some of them, like Abel & even, Bella asked me to join them... hahhaa! Thanks guy, but couldn't...

Just to add a few information of what had happened that night....Krishna was wet...... after he got to dive into the pool.. along with his not formal attire....

That's what you get for coming CASUAL to a FORMAL dinner at the POOLside.

VJ became really drunk at the end of the night.... (became apparent during the round of appreciation time)

VJ: I'm not drunk! Stop treating me like a drunk man! SHUT UP!

Actually.... after the round of appreciation.... it got me to think.... like in the picture above...
Some of us were going to be gone by next year.... like Iqbal, VJ, KC, Jenny.. even Abel himself might be gone some time next year...
sigh... I truly wonder how things will be like without these guys...
It's been so fun.... I just truly wish that it could continue like this for a much longer time... like as long as my time in Curtin!!
sigh.. but that's too much to wish for, I suppose...
Well.... Life goes on always.... You just gotta be able to adapt to the changes...

Report of the CV! Longhouse Visit

WOooHOoo!! The visit to Abel's longhouse at Sungai Entulang was GREAT!!

Morning, before 7.30, everyone coming gathered at the student drop-off area, where the bus was already waiting. Most of us were so busy taking the things that we needed onto the bus, like CV! T-shirts, our belongings, etc.
CV! members that were involved in this visit included Abel, Iqbal, VJ, KC, Joana, Serena, Yani, Chelsia, Poey, Zahoor, Jenny, Jessie, Sam, Jack, Giegel (Ms. Curtin!), (even) her family (YAY!!), Ehon, Amos (Project leader), Sara, and many others.
A few that couldn't make it were Nadia, Liz, Snow Jae... Well these are the only ones that I know that really wanted to go....

We finally move from Curtin to the longhouse at 8am. Took us about an hour to reach there. In the bus, I got to sit next to Ms Curtin! Yay for me!! ;P Some of us just slept along the ride, cause most of us were so tired and still woke up pretty early that morning...

When we finally got there, most of us were amazed by how LONG the longhouse was!
it's not just long... it's LONG!!
anyway... our visit here was not for the longhouse... We're actually there to do 'gotong-royong' at the school there.
'gotong-royong' meaning something like community work.
When we got off at the gate entrance to the school area, we were greeted by Abel's father....

then we were led to the main hall, where Abel's father, who was the principal of the school, officially welcomed us, etc...and got to give a souvenir to Amos, our project leader.

with that over with, we were then separated to do separate works. Works included preparing lunch for everyone, painting the mural in the main hall, painting the fences, carrying wood from the forest and planting some trees.
Some of the 'big boys' went to do the forest work,

some of the ladies went to help with the cooking, (picture not available)
some others just went to paint the fence (including me)

and MOST of us were at the main hall painting the mural.

I'm not too sure who went to help with the tree-planting bid.... or even IF the work was done that day... (shrugs)
About one hour or so of work, it was time for break. Got back ot the main hall to have some sandwiches and cookies and small milk packets.
It was satisfying. And also got to see the murals... nice...

Those longhouse people are really good at drawing the patterns. CV! members just painted with them.

After break, got back to work... another hour or so later (1.30pm), it was lunchtime!

Most of us sat together and ate. Fun experience!

When we were done with lunch, some of us entertained everyone else by dancing a couple of songs... 'Just A Little While' by Janet Jackson & 'Hey Mama' by Black Eyed Peas...
after that, we went to visit the longhouse... There are 99 families here and there are three blocks that made up the longhouse.
Reason why there are three separate longhouse is cause to prevent fire from destroying all their homes like once before.

WHAT A LONG WALK!!! One block of the longhouse was long enough but THREE!!!

As I said, each block of the longhouse was REALLY LONG! but it was still a fun experience.
At the third block (Block C), we stopped in the middle to have a drink... the local drink, tuak... or in English, rice wine...
EVERYONE got at least a sip of drink...

After spending quite a while at that block, it was time to play some sport!
I actually didn't want to join to play.. and just planned to watch them play volleyball... but then, they were low of one player, so I joined!
It was fun! Near evening, we had a friendly competition between a team of six from Sg. Entulang and a team of six from Curtin!
We lost... sigh... Home court advantage... Hahaha! But we still have fun!

Before we go, we did something else other than the mural at the main hall... We leave our signature on one of the walls there as well!!

6.30pm, we got back on the bus and left. It was SUCH a great time.
Most of us slept on the bus ride back to campus. We were SOO tired....
but, as I said before, it was GRREAT! Definitely plan to go visit there again in the next one... of course, with the condition that Abel is the project advisor.

Friday, October 29

Before noon, we did some more CV! stuff at the cafeteria... did some more promo for the Charity Happy Hour that was to happen that night at Ciao Mien & Hot Beans Cafe...
Then comes afternoon already... Went to Ciao Mien & Hot Beans cafe to take care of the venue set-up for the event....

at first no idea how the table arrangement was going to be! but good thing had a rough idea of the arrangements...

sigh.. so much trouble... we were supposed to be done with the venue set-up at 5pm and then after that we were to dress up for the night...

but then.. with help coming late, the extra tables and chairs late, required items not yet there, it was so troublesome!!

but eventually... although we passed the time limit with the venue set-up... we did a good job of the place... it was GREAT!!

Night,
the Starlets (Azie and her family members) were still setting up their musical instruments and equipments on the red-carpet 'stage' for the night....
I got something to eat (with RM10) and just enjoyed the music... taken care of by the Village...
soon, the Starlets began to play their live band music... and they are DEFINITELY good!!Our special charity auction went fairly well in my view.... especially the girls that were auctioned.... heheeh!

Third highest bid... Giegel with RM35, bought by Abel...
Second highest bid... Bella with RM37, bought by Andy and his friends...
Highest bid for the night... Listiari (Liz) with RM40, bought by Lenny, her boyfriend...

the auction was quite fun... especially when you knew that some people really wants to buy a particular person....
unfortunately... we couldn't do the third set of the auction.. with Serena, Jack and Nicholas... and unfortunately also, Raymond Ting could not make it for the night.... for HIS auction....
overall.. the event was all right.. but the audience was not great.... turning the whole event to a dissappointing result of all of our HARD work to promote this....
sigh.. what happened to everyone!? sigh....

Saturday, October 23

Morning was the Maths Workshop for some Form 4 students from SMK Dato Permaisuri (I think....) who were identified as poor in Maths...

CV! members involved were Abel, Daryll How (Person-in-charge), Seryna, Snow Jae, Liz, Nadia, Jessie, Jenny, Iqbal, VJ, Edmund, Amos, Ehon, Navodi & me..

there were 36 of them that came... and one teacher of theirs....

at first, we had actually predicted VERY naughty and 'sam seng' students... the ones that are usually going against the rules and being rude and all...

but it turned out to be otherwise! they were great 'kids'! better behavior than I myself had prepared myself for...

we had quite some fun... they were very sporting teenagers...the supposed reasons for their poor performance in Maths was their lack of the basics.... either from the fault of the teachers.. or their own... or both....

Anyway, many of us, the CV! members & the Form 4 students had fun... we WERE successful in making some of them start to enjoy Maths, which was a really happy triumph for us CV! members...

Most of the students wish for a longer workshop, which I felt like a really admirable compliment for us and our work...

they even wanted to spend more time with us.... two/three days and one/two nights!!

Friday, October 22

This afternoon was the CV! visit to the Sunflower Center for Special Children....

and I was given the task of organising it....

There were eight of us that went... Iqbal, Zahoor, Jenny, Nadia, Ehon, Edmund, VJ, me and plus one, Abel...

we had a lot of fun with the children there... the children loved the gifts we had for them...

it was a great experience.... (plus, we got to know how good Iqbal, VJ & Edmund were at making cookies!)

Tuesday, October 19

The day fo the official launching of JCCM.... the MCs for the event were Bay & Renee...

while waiting for the hour of the launching, Jack had bought a container of biscuits from the Sunflower Center booth (RM10) and let everyone have some.

I had quite a lot, to be honest, but it was only because I hadn't had much to eat before this and the biscuits were REALLY GOOD!! (You guys should try some, really they are GOOD!)

Before the actual launching of JCCM... there had been a few speeches made... I can't remember all of those who made the speeches.. but I do remember two of them... the Dean of CSM and Raymond Ting, President of the Student Counsel...

I can still remember Raymond praising CV! for all of its great achievements and high reputation... Hehe! ^_^

Eventually, the last speech was over... then came our turn to dance.... and dance we did!

We sure livened up the place and to be honest, I think the audience were only interested to watch our dance, than the speeches....

Despite the tension and pressure I had to endure, I forced a smile on my face during the dancing....

Hahaha! It was for the sake of leaving a good image for the CV! members as that we are having fun and enjoy doing what we do, despite the fact of hardship, pressure and etc behind what we do...

But, hey! It doesn't mean that I don't enjoy doing this, cause.. I DO!!

anyway... the second the dance was done with... I had to go and do some of my own work... course related...

So.. for information on the rest of the CV! event for this day, maybe Iqbal can fill in on that?

Monday, October 18

It was afternoon.. and we had to take care of the CV booth at the cafeteria and also do the promo of the JCCM... and at the same time rounding up some charity donation...

The promo cheerleaders doing the promo were Gretchel, Bella, Joana, Liz, Snow J, and Ehon!

VJ, Nadia, Iqbal and some others were to help around at the booth....

Me? I was to walk around as the 'sandwich box man/boy'.... What's that?

well.... putting it plainly... I was to wear some signs on my body at the front and back and walk around, promoting JCCM....

I had a better audience than I had thought I would...

then, soon, my work added to distributing fliers of JCCM and then collecting donations for charity...

Hehe! I had to say, I collect quite a load.... but it's the first day of JCCM.. so I'm afraid I'm expecting a lesser haul as time goes by... which I truly hope won't be the case....

THIS IS CHARITY, PEOPLE!!

don't be so selfish not to continue donating after the first one in a short time...

Evening, worked some more at the LT Foyer (Lecture Theatre Foyer)....

arranged the tables... the chairs... help decorate the CV! board... before all of this, practised for the dance for a while....

BOY, were those mosquitoes kind enough to stick around all the while when we were there... so kind that we were getting SO ANNOYED by their company....

anyway... after we were done at the LT Foyer.. we went to the Library Foyer.. and counted the amount of charity donation we've rounded up for the day... and the number of CV! T-shirts...

the ones that were there were Abel, Iqbal, Krishna, Serena and Amos... including myself of course...

boy.. counting the coins were such a bother... Iqbal had miscounted them twice... and I made a BIG (troublesome) mistake when counting them all for the last time...

it wasn't long before Krishna and Amos had to go home... then later, Lis and Nadia joined us....

hahaa... then we went to the topic of the Ms. Curtin Top TEN candidates....

Nadia was SO OVERJOYED when Lis got a call that night that confirms her to be one of the TOP TEN!

Hahaha! Laughed til my abdomen was aching!

We got to find out that most of the candidates for Ms. Curtin were members of CV!; Lis, Nadia, Gretchel, Snow J, Giegel and Renee!

Saturday, October 16

Morning, went on a visit to the Kidney Dialysis Centre with a group of friends... which included Abel, Serena, Snow J, Ehon, Fera, Jenny, Edmund, Wang Gek, and some others who I didn't know their names...

Boy, was the visit quite informative and as Abel commented, "An eye-opener!"...

We got to learn a lot about the kidney dialysizing process and the many causes of kidney failure that results to one needing this dialysis...

Did you know that they are NO synctoms of kidney failure and if you do see them, it is already TOO LATE!?

The only way to be sure if you have a sign of kidney failure is that you do a blood test at least once a year.

Morgan, who took us around the center, said, "Go to take a blood test during your birthday, as a present to yourself."

If you have kidney failure, you can live for like five years more or so, and with this dialysis, you can only PROLONG it to another fifteen or twenty years more.

that means having to do the dialysis process four hours each three times a week.. EVERY WEEK for the rest of your LIFE!!

if you go to the one that I visited, it costs RM120 per dialysis!! You do the math!!

Afternoon, after the visit, returned to campus... had lunch and then helped Seryna do some work at the LT Foyer...

Sara, Jenny, Lis and Nadia were there too, joined for a while by Benet, one of the student council (He's a nice guy)...

Sara didn't get to spend long with us there... and some time later, Jenny too had to go...

leaving only me, Serena, Lis and Nadia.... then Abel came back from a meeting and joined us....

It was great just to keep talking about... 'things' with one another.

To all my "babies" of CV!Curtin Volunteers! At time of trying to put all these into words, i have a mix feelings about everything -it won't fit if I were to list them down in here. But I am sure of one, and that I am so proud of all of you for all the untiring support and effort you have put into making the John Curtin Charity Month 2004 a great success, despite of all the challenges coming our way. Zillion of thanks to all those wonderful people who were involved, for without their sacrifices, commitement and team spirit, JCCM04 could not have happened.

A saying goes "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give". Sowing seeds that benefit others probably won't mean traveling to another country to serve the poor or anything like that, but to help others in your own small ways like what you have done, whether it's sacrificing your saturdays & sundays to reach out the community in need, or putting your desires on hold for the sake of your team's success. Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others. The success journey will not look the same for everyone because the picture of success is different for every person. But the principles used to take the journey don't change.

My very special thanks to Serena and Jae - the two iron ladies who stand still with all the ups and downs ever since the initiation of CV in 2002. You both have brought CV to greater heights and remember, NEVER QUIT!

Gretchel - I could not have made Dance for Humanity a reality without you sacrificing your Hong Kong trip. Of course the rest of the CV dancers - Tiang, Ehon, Lis, Navodi, Iqbal, Jack, Kian, Barke, Fiona, Jae, Sara, VJ, KC, Azie, Bella, Joanna and the great Eng Kiat. We all were awesome!

Ehon - thank you for coordinating the Kidney Dialysis visit and the Love Box Campaign. Your spirit and enthusiasm are your strengths to share with others.

Iqbal - I have so much of things to say about you but first, let me thank you for coordinating the Blood Donation. I am always amazed by your friendliness. Your kindness and easy-going attitude have touched many people around you, and yes that is including me. I have no regrets that you are Mr. O-Week Feb 2004.

Tiang - with all the preparation you have done and your "never give up" spirit in coordinating the Sunflower visit, you have earned trust from others. From the moment of awarding the Mr. O-Week July 2004 title to you, I have seen big potential in you. Learn to grow and share with others.

Daryll - with a question "how can I help?", you became the head for the Maths Workshop facilitators. Thank you for a job well-done. The modules prepared are fun, inspiring and informative. Many thanks to the other facilitators - VJ, Iqbal, Serena, Jae, Jessie, Nadia, Lis, Amos, Edmund, Navodi, Bay, Jenny, Tiang, Ehon & Joanna. Great team!

VJ, Jenny & Navodi - Excellent Happy Hour for charity. My deepest appreciation for your hard work and preparation for a lovely night. My special thanks to Azie for without your live band perfomance, the night would be dull and empty. It is hard to imagine what some people had missed for not being there.

Bay - Your Charity Singing contest was a great success. I can still remember how nervous you were in the beginning, but hey, it turned out so well. To all my babies, the dancers - Gretchel, Giegel, Joanna, Lis, Bella & Icha: You guys were AWESOME!

Amos - i know you had lots of stress coping up with your studies and at the same time coordinating the Longhouse visit but it was fantastic. I must say, it's the best! For the rest who came, i can't thank you enough for your active participations.Mother Teresa once said, "we can cure physical disease with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair & hopelessness is love".You guys have brought that love to others and certainly to ME, and I thank you all, deep from the bottom of my heart.

THIS IS FROM ME, AS THE VICE PRESIDENT of CV!, on behalf of CV! (I guess)

To Abel, thanx so, so, so much for everything, most of all you support for CV! all this while. If Jae and I (and once Deb) are the pillars, you ARE the FIRM foundation that keep us all standing. since 2002, when you first came to Curtin, you have always been there for us. I don't know HOW you can stand all the criticism for people but the way you handle them, it always gives us THE MOTIVATION to GO ON (esp our 'best friends'). I know there are times we don't do our work as well as you expected but we learn through time and I know, in time we'll improve. Look how CV! have grown (member wise and reputation wise). It's all through all OUR (you, then Deb, Jae, Me and of course, the members) hard work TOGETHER. I really appreciate your help, guidance and motivation. Thanx so much & I know, there's not enough 'THANK YOU's that I can say. Basically, there's no words to say how much your support means to US. Thanx once again for working together WITH US.

Jae... 3 yrs... It's a long time. Now it's up to us to keep the flame alive, to keep CV! alive. We've been through high and lows together and yes, some days of PMS, depressions and I guess, thr were one or two misunderstandings. Then again... I hope we can remain as we are work well together for CV! The PMS is normal for us right? Let no guy problems (esp. mine) keep us from doing our work together.

Hmm... everyone else... too many to mention.

EHON: thanx for organising the Love Box & Kidney dialysis. And of course, writing the minutes. Thanx so much for running around too... hehehe...

GRETCHEL: thanx so so much too for the dance team & the Cheerleading team. Without your help, support & enthusiasm thr would be no dance team and definitely no cheerleading team. Thanx thanx so much for your support and I hope we as CV! can work together for a long long time.

JOANNA: Thanx for your help and support too... both you and Gretchel were the backbones of the cheerleading team. Without both of you and your team... I don't know how the publicity for Curtin Carnival & JCCM would be. Thanx again & let's work together for CV! again next year ya!!

IQQY: Thanx so much for actually being able to understand all my ups and downs! I dunno wat to say... I guess you know wat I haf to say esp thank you so, so much!! Oh Abel says "my ass is bigger than yours" hahahaha.... You are a great guy and I really appreciate you handling the donation money (with Nadia) and most of all, the t-shirts. Hey, need my help to sell t-shirts next time?? If I'm free. after all, it's for the CV! we love. Thanx thanx so much.

NADIA: Thanx for helping to keep the donation money and helping to look after the booth. :-) And Yes, you were also a great MC at the Happy Hour!!LIS: Thanx for your support and participation in d dance & cheerleading teams. also, thanx for looking after the booth. :-)

JENNY: Yo! You put a lot of effort in the promo for Happy Hour & I really thank you for your help & support. Without you, Navodi & Vijay doing the promo & organzing the Happy Hour would haf not been a success. Thanx so much.

NAVODI: Sis, I really dun know wat to say. Just a simple thank you isn't enough. I know you sacrificed a lot of your time for CV! (like many others) and your lifely & happy -go-lucky attitude actually motivated (U din know, but thr were some bad days...)Thanx so much for working together once again. CV! would not be a lifely without you and these past 2 yrs since you were in CV! we've worked together... I dunno wat else to say... Love ya, sis!

VIJAY: Yes, the man. You were the core of all the promos man (of course, the Cheerleader, Jenny & Navodi too! ) But the way you handle the mic & catch ppl's attention in d canteen... I salute you. Charity Happy Hour... You & Nadia were great!!! Be our MC next year again can? ;-)

DARYLL: Mr Maths himself. I really salute you man, esp the way you did the maths thingy. So far, I know how to do question one already! hehehehe...

AMOS: Hey, u seemed so quiet all trip... I know you were worried about the Long House Trip but Hey! It was a success. I hope we can haf more of such activities. It's an eye opener for many especially the international and non sarawakian student. Thanx so much 4 ur hard work... next year ya!

To everyone else Thanx so much. Thr's so many of you that I wanna say THANK YOU to... Words can't describe the gratitude to all... Keep on working together for CV! and the community. Keep the CV! Flame burning and may we achive better things in the future. I'm so, so sorry IF I DID HURT ANYONE'S FEELINGS ALL THIS WHILE.
